I guess ‘shows’ is standard Guardianese. But even cryptic definitions surely have to allude to the actual meaning of the word / phrase. ‘A rolling stone gathers no moss’ means something like ‘people that keep moving don’t become attached to things’, which is not suggested by the clue at all – it’s a kind of ‘double wordplay’ clue.

But I think that “shows” in the Rolling Stone clue qualifies as the anagrind and the second part (what Mick won’t get from Kate) almost qualifiies as a cryptic definition.
