Another demonstration of why crosswords don’t have to be difficult to be entertaining. Interesting, and subtle, ambiguity at 3A though.

Across
3 (FAR LESS BIG)* – I filled in FIBRE GLASS at first (which is correct definition- and wordplay-wise) but it was only when I realised that I was making absolutely no progress with the NE corner of the grid that I thought that this might not be the right answer. Checking them both in the dictionary later it seems that FIBREGLASS is (10) but GLASS FIBRE is (5,5), which is the enumeration in the clue. I wonder if any other solvers got duped by this, or was it just me?
9 (b)UTTERED
12 DRILL,SERGE,ANT
14 EXETER – which is both a university and an Oxford college.
15 ARDEN in GER
17 (A SUM DAC’S)* – one of the those anagrams that leaps out at you.
23 E in (LARK A CHIRPER)* – misleading definition and clue context. A reference to the jazz saxophonist.
24 HAD, I in RAN – of “Wall” fame.
25 PEERAGE – I assume this is a reference to Burke’s Peerage.
26 A in ANGER in MESS – either Dac has “issues” with female managers or “bossy female” is a pun on women who are also bosses.

Down
2 A,STAIR,E
7 R in BITTEN – nice surface reading and, on a personal note, my favourite composer.
8 even letters from “wEeDy GuY” – this was the clue that alerted me to the fact that 3A was wrong as I had S??? and from the wordplay it’s obvious that the answer can’t start with an S.
10 ROLLERS, AT in KING
13 (ARECTRSHIP)*
16 DUB,LINER
18 CE,DO in MAN
20 A,WK,WARD
21 V (PASSE)*

Dac acknowledged the problem at 3 Across in a note submitted with the crossword. The enumeration is the key.

I enjoyed this too – re MANAGERESS I read “bossy female” as a female who is a boss, i.e. a manager, giving the answer. Liked the novel (to me) approach to UTTERED.
