I thought this was tough in places but lots of fun, with the sort of pop culture theme we only see in the Independent crossword. Not sure about 8D though so suggestions welcome. Read the rest of this entry »

Guardian 24,064/Audreus – not too hard

Posted by loonapick on 30th April 2007

A very quick solve (app 8 mins). Most of the clues were very straightforward and the wordplay acceptable. There were a few examples of superfluous linkwords placed in the clue to allow the surface to read better, but I can forgive these on a Monday (at least I didn’t get a Rufus).

Everyman 3160/quick solve

Posted by ilancaron on 29th April 2007

Solving time: pretty quickly

Not sure how long I took to solve this since I was multi-tasking at the time but I don’t recall any untoward hold-ups. In retrospect not much to comment on either which is too bad. The across clues were more interesting than the downs.

Guardian 24,057 (Sat 21 Apr)/Araucaria – A hard day’s night

Posted by rightback on 28th April 2007

rightback.

Solving time: 42 mins; one missing (1ac).

A common feature of Araucaria’s puzzles is the inclusion of very long phrases spanning multiple clues with very complex wordplay. This week’s complementary phrases were SOMETHING OF THE NIGHT and YOU CAN’T GET THE STAFF THESE DAYS, though the connection only occurred to me after solving. I needed plenty of checking letters before solving the second phrase which made this puzzle slow going before then.

Guardian 24,062/Arachne – ducks, drakes and a dragon!

Posted by loonapick on 27th April 2007

loonapick.

Apologies for the lateness and brevity of this post, but I have already blogged a Times and an Inquisitor today, and submitted a puzzle for publication in a charity newspaper, as well as keeping my job –  just! This was a good puzzle with some unusual words, but the wordplay was generally fair.

Independent 6400 / Monk – oho, aha …

Solving time 22:05

I found this very tough, and was grateful for spotting the Nina – palindromes in the unchecked letters on each edge of the grid – DEIFIED, REPAPER, ROTATOR and REVIVER. Read the rest of this entry »

Independent 6405/Nimrod

Posted by Colin Blackburn on 27th April 2007

Colin Blackburn.

This one was unusually tough for me, though perhaps that’s to be expected on a Friday and from Nimrod. I felt a little short-changed at only having 22 clues, though at least that means I have less to write for this blog entry. I was introduced to a neologism, though on googling it seems its a well-used term. Some of Nimrod’s excellently misleading definitions made this an enjoyable puzzle once the answers dawned, though a couple of inexplicable word plays marred the puzzle slightly. Solvers’ hint #1: Check the date before tackling a crossword – sometimes it makes the theme blindingly obvious very quickly.Bloggers’ hint #1: If you take your crossword folder on a plane, complete with solution and notes, remember to remove said folder from the seat pocket in front of you on exiting the plane!

Independent 6404 by Bannsider

Posted by bensand on 26th April 2007

I have less time on a Thursday for crosswords and blogging than on other weekdays and I was mildly concerned to see Bannsider’s name at the top today as I’ve found him among the more testing setters before. All well in the end though and an entertaining crossord with no clues that felt like fillers. Read the rest of this entry »

Guardian 24061/Araucaria – Seasonal games

Solving time: 30’

Whew! I almost got blown away by this one. I’m going to say it again: I don’t see how this can be solved on the tube. I realize, having said that, someone will say that they managed to crack it from Piccadilly to Knightsbridge using a pen and the back of The Guardian. Standing up. Probably michod.

Guardian 24060/Brummie — a bit of fun.

Posted by Colin Blackburn on 25th April 2007

Colin Blackburn.

Several clues used 12 as the definition in a couple of different ways. I got three card games before I got GAME itself and assumed I was looking for card games, thus PARTRIDGE had me for a while. A lot of the clues were of the very straightforward charade type, A+B, most of which naturally split into two parts. Most of these I have left uncommented upon. A little more invention and variety would have been nice. I found a couple of the words obscure and resorted to a dictionary for RECUSANTS and ALGECIRAS. Read the rest of this entry »

Guardian 24,059, Gordius: All bar two

Posted by michod on 24th April 2007

michod.

Took me about 20 minutes, except for the last two clues, which I feel could take another week. Offers welcomed for 13 across and 22 down. What with these, and several dictionary words I guessed, I’d call it medium hard in the new classification system. And Ximenean in parts – but then, I didn’t know I was a Ximenean until I read my profile! Maybe we need some new terms to describe our attitude to ideological conflicts such as whether different wordplay functions can be combined in one word, and whether Labour leader can equal L. Indeedies? Gatesheadites?
