I always enjoy Virgilius puzzles. This was no exception, lots to enjoy and very rarely anything dissatisfying in any way. No theme or nina as far as I can tell although 1A and 27A are of a kind.

Across
1 THUMBNAIL SKETCH – THUMB for hitch + NAILS KETCH
9 ROWAN
11 WHIPLESS – the party being a political part in the House of Commons
13 SHERPA – (PHRASE)* – the wording had me thinking of nawabs and rajas rather than climbers but with a six-letter anagram it doesn’t take too long to stumble across the correct answer
15 IMMACULATE – (A METAL IM)* and CU
18 NINETY-NINE – one of those clues where the surface is mostly a set of instructions for chopping around material. Composer initally is C, which is a hundred. Take away one to get 99.
19 SALT – ? a tar is a salt. Not sure whether it’s present chemically in china clay. With ?A?T there are a lot of words which fit so I suppose this might be something else – any offers?
23 ATHEISTS – AT HEISTS
25 APPLIANCE – double definition
27 DRAUGHTSMANSHIP – DRAUGHTS + MAN + SHIP

Down
1 THROW IN ONES HAND
2 UNWRITTEN
3 BANG + LA
4 ADJUSTMENT – hidden word, very long for a hidden word, what’s the longest hidden word anyone’s come across?
6 KEELHAUL – sounds like KIEL HALL. The tar is an unfortunate sailor rather than pitch.
7 TATER – TATE (trad) + R. King Edward is a variety of potato
8 HER MAJESTYS SHIP – HER MAJESTYS + S + HIP
20 LEGION – LEGI(R)ON
22 TYPE A – a personality type. Maybe I’m not reading it right but the second part doesn’t seem to work that well to me. It seems as if “start” is doing double duty, once to show that you should be starting an autobiography as in starting to type it and once for the first letter of autobiography itself.

There seems to be a lot of nautical stuff, though not quite a theme – two -SHIP answers and one -KETCH one among other things.

22D: Clue: “Like highly driven person, start autobiography?”. For me “start autobiography” equates to “type ‘A’”, so just provides a second def. The “starting to write an autobiography” idea seems to be in the surface meaning only.

TAR = SALT = ChiNA CLay Chemical symbol for salt NaCl
