But I’ll freely admit that once the grid is filled, I wouldn’t normally worry about sorting out the last few details.

Perhaps not, though…

The clue works as TRAIT in SL + ACE.

SL is a bit obscure, but I was at pains not to have anagrams in clues whose answers, even after manipulation, were to be anagrammed, so many ways into a 10-letter answer with friendly letters for anagrams were barred.
