Inquisitor 30 Group Dynamics by Quixote

Colin Blackburn.

An unintentional train journey led me to buy the Independent on a Saturday and solve most of this puzzle on the way home (London to Durham so not that fast!) Then a forgetful blogger failing to get a paper gave me the chance to write this. So, the Independent didn’t increase their sales but I did enjoy this puzzle from Quixote. It was at the easy end of thematics but with very good cluing from Quixote and not too many unusual words.

There were enough straightforward cryptic clues to get a few answers in and then use the checked letters to find the letter mixtures. Unless a letter mixture stands out at you it is worth waiting until you have enough checked letters to narrow down the search area of the clue. Using the additional rubric of starting at the start or ending at the end further narrows down the search.

The extra letters in the mixture spelt out MY NAME IS LEGION. I’m not a Bible expert but ODQ gave me a reference to Mark 5:9 where I was reminded that Legion was an unclean spirit who was cast out into the Gadarene swine. Thus to finish the puzzle the four down entries were spirits in pigs.

DD = double definition.

Across
1 A LEVEL — ALE+V+E+L
5 SAMBAS — S+AMBAS(sador) — well spotted halving of ambassador.
9 NODI — DON< +I — a good self referential surface.
35 SILT — L in SIT
36 TEASEL — TEASE+L
37 ENTREE — EN+TREE — EN = nut
Down
1 ANATHEMA — A in ANTHEM+A
2 LOMA — LO(AM)<
3 VIZIER — VIZ+I+ER — the zed here helped a lot with the DLM checking with it.
4 LENO — DD — Dan Leno rather than Jay Leno.
5 STUTTER — ST+UTTER — nice surface.
6 MECCA — EC in MC+A
7 ADAGIO — ADA + (I GO)*
8 SALT — DD
10 BOGY in BOAR
11 IMP in SWINE
14 DEMON in HOG
15 FIEND in ELT
18 STELLATE — ‘ELL in STATE
20 NOSTRIL — NO+S+TRI(a)L
23 IGNORE — I+G(N)ORE
25 FREEST — F+REEST — funny looking word. Gretna Green referring to the Scottish word as well as building the surface.
27 ROTAS — ROT+AS
29 PHOT — P+HOT
30 TOSE — “toes”
31 ISLE — thIS LEtterbox — good surface hiding the definition well. Interestingly this would have worked with an enumeration of (5).

Well, they got one extra sale because I bought the paper for the first time that Saturday. Mainly because there was a free book on poker tactics with it, but it gave me a chance to have a go at the Inquisitor too.

I agree with you on most points, a nice easy introduction for me – I only had to use Chambers once or twice just to check a couple of answers, although then I had to look up Mark 5:9 online to understand how to enter the unclued lights.
