Dac is well-known amongst Indy solvers but we’re used to seeing him on a Wednesday so it was something of a surprise to see his name next to the Saturday prize puzzle. This was a little more difficult than the Wednesday puzzles but still much easier than we’re used to for a Saturday. Lots of fun though, with some very nice clues (12a and 6d were my favourites).

1 A, LIB in HUT
9 RECCE – I think this is partly a homophone clue: “damaged vehicle” = “wreck”.
10 UR in PEN,IOUS – I thought “word of hesitation” was going to be UM or ER and it took a while to rule both of those out.
12 RU, IN in (TEAM)* – this is very well done indeed: “Think rugby team rearranged home fixture?” I especially liked “fixture” to indicate IN appearing in (TEAM)*.
23 A,X,MIN,(REST)*
24 HOUSE – double definition. HOUSE is TV series starring Hugh Laurie.
25 (RUSS[-i]A)*,ER
26 S in DECENT – “track down” is very misleading here and it took me a while to consider a meaning other than the obvious one.
1 HO,OW in RITZ – Vladimir HOROWITZ. Thanks to Mrs D for knowing this one.
6 STRAIGHT FLUSHES – the wordplay is obvious enough but the definition – “the runs” – isn’t. In poker, a STRAIGHT FLUSH is a hand of 5 cards in sequence and all the same suit. If it’s ace high, it’s called a royal flush (which is the highest ranking poker hand, followed by a straight flush)
8 K,I M in SET – I knew the word KISMET but didn’t realise it was a musical (among other things).
13 CHIC,HESTER – I was a bit unsure about this when I filled it in but I don’t really see what else it could be.
15 END in VE,USE
19 MM in (ALAS)* – “about eight years ago” would be 2000 or MM in roman numerals.
22 FR,ED – “English” isn’t really needed here but I guess it makes the clue read a bit better.

Thanks for confirming on 1D. Have never heard of the guy and couldn’t quite get my head around the wordplay.

Agreed on 6D. That one raised a smile.

I like to vary the Saturday slot, as I’m aware that there are people who only buy the paper on that day, but Dac’s puzzle was given this particular Saturday because of the inclusion of Twelfth Night.
