What a great thematic – the three homonyms of Cs in the middle, and the ‘C’ words all arranged symmetrically. The other C-word wasn’t hidden in the unches somewhere, was it?

Thanks for both those. I’d thought that the “bus, oddly” was B(u)S. I suspected 4A was a DD but the bus boarding meaning of catch never occurred to me.

7D c is the speed of light which is maximum speed. Thus C inside O(BUS)* REST

4A Isn’t this a straight DD Managed to board (e.g. catch a bus)

The ones I’m unsure of are:

4A “Managed to board and capture” (CAUGHT)
7D “Maximum speed in ordinary bus, oddly, remains most vague” (OBSCUREST), it’s the “Maximum speed” and CU bits I don’t get
