Common abbreviations used

*(fodder) = anagram

After struggling long and hard the previous day with Nimrod in the Indy (the other alter ego), I started solving this puzzle, expecting no mercy. So, it was pleasantly surprising that I got through most of the clues without much problem. Only 5 and 13,14 caused me to pause.
1 CLIP ON Ins of LIP (edge) in con (do or cheat)
5 DEAR SIRS Ins of EARSI (Israel minus last letter reversed) in DR’S
9 ANGLICAN *(lancing a)
10 CRUISE Tom Cruise
11 AUSTIN POWERS *(in post-war use)
13,14 PAID THE PRICE This was my most intriguing clue of all. The definition seemed obvious enough but “a self-made bed?” Then I remembered the expression “You’ve made your bed and now you have to lie in it”. Chambers nailed it for me : lie in the bed one has made = to have to accept the consequences of one’s own acts.
17,18 LADY JANE GREY Ins of Y JA (years German for yes) in *(legendary). Lady Jane Grey, (1536/1537–12 February 1554), also referred to as Queen Jane, a grandniece of Henry VIII of England, reigned as uncrowned Queen Regnant of the Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Ireland for nine days in July 1553.
20 DEPARTMENTAL Very neat cha of depart (go) mental (mad)
23 PEN PAL Ins of P (President) in Penal
24 AUDITORY Audi (German car) Tory (Conservative or right)
25 STONE AGE Ins of ONE in Stage (coach)
26 YEOMAN Ye (the old) Oman (the Sultanate state)

2,12 LINE MANAGEMENT I wonder how you categorise such a clue
3 POLYANDRY Ins of O (love) in PLY (work) *(randy)
5 DENNIS THE MENACE *(he man tendencies) for that character in Beano comics; also the title of a TV series and a successful film
6 ARCH-POET *(preach to)
7 SQUAW squaw (k)
8,22 RESTRICTED AREA *(created a stir re)
15 RIGOLETTO Ins of Go (pass) LET (permit) in RITO *(riot)- an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi.
16 MANTILLA Man (chap) TI LLA (rev of all it, every object)
19 STODGY Ins of D in stogy, a long cheap cigar (new word for me)
21 ASPEN ha

I’m glad you managed to solve the wordplay in 5a 😉

I got Dear Sirs, but completely missed the Israel as the ‘relapsing’ state – does this count as a subtle political point ? Being really nit-picking the possessive apostrophe in doctor’s in the subsidiary part of the clue – is this needed ?

Really liked some of the clues like the 17,18 where the definition (‘proclaimed ruler’) flows neatly into the rest of the clue, and likewise 3D – for a time I thought the def was ‘Having lots of mates in work’ and could be something like pallishly, before realising the definition part actually finished 2 words earlier.

I did not like so much 24A Auditory (forges ahead – seems superfluous), and 13,14 : Settled into a self-made bed – ‘into’ is distracting (for me at least, this was one of 3 I cam up short on). For 23A, ‘Our Junior Correspondent’ as a def for pen-pal – well that got me ! 2,12 D – a kind of double definition OK but not the most satisfying.

Good to have a change though – normally I only look for the Araucarias on a weekend !
