As I only have Chambers and COED in hardcopy I tend to refer to these first when seeking correlation between definitions and answers and only resort to the on-line Collins if I am unable to find a satisfactory explanation.

The reference to ‘two steps’ was not intended as a criticism, I was merely indicating to those solvers who only use Chambers that there is a link if you look for it.

Just to be clear, ’twas I who notified Neil, not the Ed. The clue cited in your intro was the one supplied by me. What happened between then and publication I don’t know very much about – I noticed the error on scanning the clues in the online paper, probably just as you did.

While I’m here, let me defend ‘mysterious’ as a straight def for ORACULAR in Collins (sense 3).
