Gaufrid.

Rishi is away at a family gathering so I am covering for him today. A ‘liquid’ theme from Gozo, apt for the time of year. Having at one time run my own public house and restaurant, most of the thematic entries were well known to me but I cannot say I have ever served mate, tisane or crusta (and there wasn’t much demand for sake! :-)

My only concern with this puzzle was in 16a where ‘esso’ was clued as ‘petrol’. Surely ESSO is a company that refines and supplies petrol, not the product itself.

My thanks to Chambers (11th Ed) for the definitions.

    Hi Gaufrid

I have no problem with ESSO = ‘petrol’: it sounds as if you’ve pulled many a pint of Guinness in your time!

  2. Gaufrid says:

    Hi Eileen
One or two, yes, but only when stored properly and when at the correct temperature.

  3. smiffy says:

A late solve for me today, so surprised to see only a pygmy-sized thread at this hour.

I tend to agree on Esso, as it’s merely a homophonic corporate abbreviation (from Standard Oil). It didn’t strike me as a cardinal sin though, as the intent was unambiguous. Just a tad slapdash.
