Independent 6,928/Glow-Worm

Ali.

Good stuff from Glow-Worm, whose recent Listener puzzle is still on my to-do pile. There’s a mini theme here, with 4 answers contaning the word PLUS and a further reference at 1A. I struggled with some less common words which I’m guessing were needed to fit the theme.

Across
1 PLUS SIGN – (SLIPS GUN)* – Refers to 13A, 14A, 23A and 17D
5 PATOIS – PAT + initial letters of ‘operational impactful shelfware’. An interesting choice of words, but underatandable given the ‘jargon’ context
9 RATTIGAN – GI in RATTAN – I needed help with this as I’d never heard of RATTAN or Terence Rattigan!
10 TOBAGO – BAG in TOO
12 SALAD – Hidden in palladium’S ALADdin
13 PLUS FOURS – PL + OUR in (FUSS)* – ‘Bags’ here referring to the (golf) trousers
14 RIEN NE VA PLUS – (IS PARVENU LEN)*
18 SEVERANCE PAY – A nice CD
21 CARDCASES – CAS[-h] in (SCARED)*
23 PLUSH – L in PUSH
24 INLAID – Can’t quite piece this one together. Regulars in Albania gives LAI, but not sure where Dan fits in.
25 SYLLABUB – (L,BUSY LAB)*
26 SYSTEM – (MY SETS)*
27 PEDANTRY – P.E.,DAN,TRY
Down
1 PERUSE – US in PERE
2 UNTOLD – “Untolled”
3 SPIN DRIER – (RIDER)* – Not sure what you’d call this kind of clue where the anagrind is also part of the answer
4 GRASPINGNESS – GRASPING,NESS – Is this a common word? I’ve never heard it before
6 ALOOF – A,FOOL rev.
7 OPAQUELY – O,PA,QU,ELY
8 SCORSESE – (CROSSES)*,E (‘spot of enlightenment’)
11 TUBELESS TYRE – [-le]E[-ds] in (LET BUSES TRY)*
15 A CAPPELLA – A,C,APP,ELLA
16 PSYCHICS – Hidden in tiPSY CHICKENS once you remove former Mayor Of London KEN
17 OVERPLUS – (SOLVER UP)*
19 TURBOT – TUR[-n],BOT[-tom]
20 SHABBY – Odd letters of SoHo As BoBbY’s
22 CHINE – CH.,IN,E – Another word I hadn’t come across before, but a great chess-related surface reading

Fantastic crossword. I’m really not well adapted to the Independent Cryptics, however, I like the Setters names used – Glow-worm, Punk, Dac, Nimrod etc all sound rather cool.

Thank-you Ali for explaining the details on the clues.

I normally try my brain at the Guardian depending on the Setter, but people nit-pick at it too often. The F.T is my regular daily which is real fun to do and no problems on my part. But, I’ll ditch the Guardian depending on the compiler and start doing the Independent as there is nothing but praise and good reviews on every Crossword!

Well done Glow-worm. And thank you Ali for the blog. Have a good evening both.

    Jake.

I’ve been doing the DT, Guardian and i for many years now, and I am always amazed at the cleverness and the wit of a variety of setters. As a French native speaker, I also enjoy the odd French clue à la “Rien ne va plus”. Good bunch of comments and great blog, so thanks all!
