Prize puzzle from the Weekend FT of January 10
A few minor challenges here made a typically enjoyable puzzle. Cincinnus came up with some great anagrams for the long downers. (Yeah, I know “downers” are something else and acrossers don’t even exist.)

Good stuff, and thanks for the blog, Pete – cleared up a couple of queries for me, though still not sure I get the “characteristic of the pits?” part of 22a.
2d may well be my favourite clue of 2009 so far.

22a the middle of ‘the pits’ is ‘epi’ so you get EPI CENTRE i.e. a ‘characteristic of the pits’.
