Weekend FT prize puzzle from January 24
I found the top-left quadrant of this puzzle to be a challenge to complete. I was not familiar with the Battle of Solferino and was thwarted for a good time by the wordplay in 1D.

Across
9. SOFERINO – F (France) + ERIN (Ireland) in SOLO (game)
10. LEEDS – homophone (“leads”)
11. KNEECAP – anagram of CAN KEEP
12. OBSCURE – OBS (Bob’s not the first) + CURE (remedy)
13. YON – Y[uk]ON
14. PETERSFIELD – PETER (safe) + [lei]S[ure] + FIELD (all runners)
17. BOYLE – BOY (young man) + L[egislatur]E. This refers to a law of physics, about the behaviour of gases as stated by Robert Boyle.
18. MOA – initial letters
19. UTTER – double definition
21. TRANSPORTED – double definition
23. RUM – double definition
25. HOLDALL – cryptic definition
27. PUT UPON – PUT UP (sort of job) + ON[e]
28. RUNES – anagram of N + SURE
29. NEW YORKER – NEW (Novel) + YORKER (special delivery). This “special delivery” refers to cricket.

Down
1. ASH-KEY – K (weekend) in ASHE (often seeded on, i.e. Arthur) + Y (yes)
2. ALDERNEY – ALDER (tree) + YEN (longing) backwards
3. BENCH PRESS – BENCH (judges) + PRESS (journalists)
4. LIMP – double definition

15. TOM COLLINS -anagram of COT[t]ON MILLS
16. FOUNDATION – double definition
17. BUTCHERS – double definition
20. TURNPIKE – TURN (cycle) + PIKE (fish). Good one!
22. ASLANT – AS (like) + [at]LANT[ic]
24. MINORS – hidden word
26. APSE – S (service) in APE (primate)
27. PAWS – homophone (“pause”). I have seen several variants of this clue recently.
