Colin, thanks for the explanation of 31a. I had thought about TUR(k), and I had noticed VIRTUE was an order of Angels, but I guess my brain didn’t make the connection as it didn’t see VIE as meaning ‘bid for power’. I think I need only kick myself gently.

I agree that it was a bit of a dictionary hunt for many of the fools.

Under the headword SAINT, Chambers gives “…; an angel (Bible, Milton); …” so I reckon it’s OK.

Challenging, but ultimately not completely satisfying, since one could complete the entries leaving some clues unsolved. Also, some indication of the unchecked/mutually cross-checked letters in those 7 entries would have lead to more directed guesses for e.g. DOTTLE, GALAH, SAWNEY, rather than just hunting in the dictionary.

It seems that VIRTUE is one of the hierarchies of angels and an angel in that hierarchy.

Ba gave up on this one, and Ho and I only finished it yesterday! We too are baffled by the last angel, though we had all the fools. I’m not really too keen on SAINT – which we hadn’t found – as an angel. Surely there was a better 5 letter angel to clue than that. After all it didn’t have to fit into the grid. (Ireul or Satan would have done for instance?)
