Colin, thanks for the explanation of 31a. I had thought about TUR(k), and I had noticed VIRTUE was an order of Angels, but I guess my brain didn't make the connection as it didn't see VIE as meaning 'bid for power'. I think I need only kick myself gently.

I agree that it was a bit of a dictionary hunt for many of the fools.

Under the headword SAINT, Chambers gives "...; an angel (Bible, Milton); ..." so I reckon it's OK.

Challenging, but ultimately not completely satisfying, since one could complete the entries leaving some clues unsolved. Also, some indication of the unchecked/mutually cross-checked letters in those 7 entries would have lead to more directed guesses for e.g. DOTTLE, GALAH, SAWNEY, rather than just hunting in the dictionary.

31a: VIRTUE TUR[k]* in VIE
It seems that VIRTUE is one of the hierarchies of angels and an angel in that hierarchy.

Ba gave up on this one, and Ho and I only finished it yesterday! We too are baffled by the last angel, though we had all the fools. I'm not really too keen on SAINT - which we hadn't found - as an angel. Surely there was a better 5 letter angel to clue than that. After all it didn't have to fit into the grid. (Ireul or Satan would have done for instance?)
