*=anag, []=dropped, <=reversed, hom=homophone, cd=cryptic definition, dd=double definition.

Top stuff as always. I think I’ve managed to explain everything, but there’s a couple I’m a bit shaky on.

Across
1 STICK INSECT – STICK IN SECT.
9 CARRIWITCHET – (CHART + CREW + IT)*.
11 UVEAL – [ma]UVE + AL[l].
12 LAGENA – LAG + ANE<.
14 SORORAL – SOR[e] + ORAL.
15 PREMEDPD “apprehending” REME.
16 CLIMB – LIMB “behind” C.
19 DEHISCE – (E[a]CH SIDE)*.
20 OURARIS – OUR + RIS[e].
22 RECTO – RECTO[r].
23 TEEMER – TEER “surrounding” ME.
24 ETHIOPS – (HOPES IT)*.
26 TIFOSI – (IS OF IT)*.
27 YENTA – (YET “absorbing” N) + A.
28 COURT PLASTER – (COP “holding” ‘URT) + LASTER.
29 CLOSE-FISTED – CLOSE + (ITS* in FED).
Down
1 SCULPTOR – CULP[able] in (ST + OR).
2 TAVERN – TAVER + N.
3 CRAB MEAT – (CRAM + EAT) “around” B[righton].
4 IWIS – dd. I think this is just a dd, but I wondered about the “There are”, and spent some time trying to do something with [k]IWIS. Full clue was “There are tribes in New Zealand for certain”.
5 NILOTES – IL[l] in NOTES.
6 STARCHIER – ARCH in (S + TIER).
7 CHERISHMENT – (ISH “embraced by” HER MEN) in CT. I think “Queen’s Lovers, say” is HER MEN, but it feels a bit loose, so I’m probably overlooking a specific reference or something.
8 ET ALETA + L.
10 RESEARCHFUL – (HER CARS FUEL)*.
13 HEN ROOSTS – HOSTS “holding” (ONE< “about” R[egiment]).
17 LIKENESS – (K + SEEN)* in LIS.
18 BEAR WARD – R in (BE + AWARD).
19 DIP-PIPE – DIE “clogged by” (P + PIP).
21 DEBTEE – BED< + TEE.
24 FETCH – [f]ETCH.
25 SELF – FLES[h]<.

Tribes in New Zealand are, I think, IWIS, plural of IWI from Chambers. IWIS also means ‘certainly’ so ‘for certain’ seems OK. ‘There are’ may just be a link.
Re CHERISHMENT maybe you’d quote the clue in full. Did not have time to tackle the puzzle, unfortunately.

  2. Simon Harris says:

The clue was “Tenderness – issue embraced by Queen’s lovers, say, in court”. Sadly it doesn’t seem any clearer to me now than it did two weeks ago!

  3. nmsindy says:

Thanks, Simon, I think it’s ISH = issue (Chambers) embraced by queen’s lovers maybe HER MEN in court i.e. CT. What I’m not entirely sure about is the HER, the queen is ER so maybe that might have something to do with it.
