Quite tough going for me this week, and there’s a couple I’m not sure about, as is usually the case!

Across
1 PUDDING-TIME – PUDDING + TIME[s].
9 EUPHONY – EU + PHONY.
10 LAZIO – 1 in (LAZ[y] + O[p]). That’s a bit of a guess – the full wordplay was “one secured in part of cowboy operation!”.
12 OCCLUSORS – I’m stumped: “Muscles? One-third of co-ordinating muscles could show me these”.
13 ISOLDA – I SOLD A.
14 FOSSAE – SOS* in FOE.
16 LEWES – W in LEES.
19 HEARTLET – LATER* in THE*.
20 ALE-BERRY – REBEL< in ARY.
24 CORAM – CO + RAM.
26 IASTIC – ASTI “consumed by” A C. Iastic is another name for the Ionian mode, a musical term, hence “noted”.
27 TAPETI – PET “covered by” TAI.
28 ON THE BALL – NOT* + HE + BALL.
29 NIGER – (R + EG + IN)<.
30 CHLADNI – LOAD in (CH + NI). Ernst Chladni, German physicist, 1756-1827.
31 GALLOWS-TREE – (ALLOWS + S[pec]T[ators]) “to enter” GREE.
Down
1 VEXILLATION – VEX + ILLATION.
2 PULSE – PULE “stuffed with” S.
3 UPTOWNERS – PUT* + OWNERS.
4 DHOLES – D + HOLES.
5 IN CAMERA – INCA “going round” AMER.
6 GLUON – GLU[t] + ON.
7 TASSET – SAT< + SET.
8 MIRAGES – MIR + AGES.
11 OSELTAMIVIR – (SOME VITAL)* + I + R. The flu drug that is in the news as Tamiflu.
15 SCLEREIDE – (CEL[l] in IS RED)* + E, I think.
17 WARATAHS – ((TAR + A) in SHAW)<.
18 ALBANIA – BAN in ALIA .
21 BETHEL – THE in BEL[t].
22 POPLAR – POP[u]LAR.
23 PIERO – PIERO[gi].
25 ATONE – A TONE. It took me a moment to see how this is a change in pitch, but I guess it’s an interval, and thus the difference between two notes.

  1. Gaufrid says:

10a is I in LAZO – lazo is a variant spelling of lasso.

12a ME OCCLUSORS is an anagram of CO-OR[dinating] MUSCLE. The ‘these’ in the clue is referring to the answer.
