Ali.

Lovely stuff once again from Mr. Halpern. I would imagine that anyone not familiar with Indie music may have struggled with some of the band-related clues, but this one fortunately played right into my hands. I was half-expecting The Libertines to appear somewhere, but alas no.

Across
8/14/21 DIRTY PRETTY THINGS – (NIGHTS)* after R + P in TYRE, all in DITTY! – The kind of piece-it-all-together clue you often see in Araucaria puzzles. I got it once most of the checking letters of THINGS were in place. DPT is the band that Carl Barat formed after The Libertines split
9 EXAMINER – IMAX in RENE rev.
10 PINS – SNIP rev.
11 SUPER FURRY ANIMALS – (FAILURE + ARMY SPURNS)* – A nice angram, though probably tricky if you’ve never heard of them
15 OMINOUS – O (start to Operation), M1 (motorway), NOUS (intelligence)
20/19 ARCTIC MONKEYS – KEYS on ARCTIC MON(day) – Probably the easiest of the band clues to solve. This one provided my way in to the mini-theme
22 OBSTRUCT – BST + RU in OCT(ober) – BST for ‘summer’ is very neat
24 STRIP POKER – 1 + P in STROKER
26/12 BABYSHAMBLES – BY in BASH + AMBLES – The other band that was formed after the The Libertines split, this one by everyone’s favourite shambling baby Pete Doherty
27 DOGGEDLY – Cryptic def.
28 OUNCE – And another
Down
1 ODDISH – DO rev. + DISH
2 FRESHMAN – Not quite sure on this one, other than the ‘inexperienced student’ definition?
3 BYES – B YES (which follows from A NO)
4 DEEPEST – DEE,PEST
5 CAPRI PANTS – CAP,RIP,ANTS
6 MINUTE – Double def.
7 DETRITAL – (LITTER A D[-rag])*
14 LAUNCH PADS – (LAND UP + CASH)*
16 MARATHON – I think this is (Jean-Paul) MARAT + HON(ourable)
23 COBWEB – Double def., ref. Midsummer Night’s Dream
25 ROOD – DOOR rev.

2 uses serf (reversed) HM AN. Great puzzle, even tho I’d only heard of one of the groups, my interest in pop fading about the time the Animals (with no prefix) originally appeared.

Thanks for the post, Ali. Despite being familiar with all the bands, I still found this very difficult to get started on at all. As usual with Punk/Paul/Mudd, however, the clues were excellent :)

I’m not sure if it was deliberate, but you omitted 18d MORIBUND = RIB in MOUND.

16 down is indeed a very neat reference to the French revolutionary Marat, killed in the bath by Charlotte Corday in 1793.
