Pete Maclean.

Prize puzzle from the Weekend FT of July 25

I found this puzzle to be a good challenge. I particularly like 3D and 23D, and fail to understand 27A.

Across
1. DOCTOR – D (died) + OCTO[be]R
4. DIPLOMAT – DIP (drop) + LO (look) + MAT (cover)
9. STRING – double definition
10. STITCH-UP – double definition
12. RAIL – double definition
13. FLORENTINE – anagram of TEN (10) in FLORIN (10p) + E (English). Seems a bit of a stretch to refer to a 10p piece as a florin in this day, no?
15. TRAFFIC LIGHT – TRAFFIC (trade) + LIGHT (delicate)
18. HOUSE-TRAINED – O (oxygen) in anagram of IN EARTH USED
21. ROISTERING – ROI (French king) + STER[l]ING (British money with pound spent)
22. LEAN – double definition
24. WHITE ANT – HIT (clobber) + [tre]E in WANT (need)
25. SHERPA – hidden word
26. REASSESS – anagram of ARE + E (safe finally) in SS SS (two ships)
27. TWELVE – ???. I am guessing that this involves the abbreviated names of two pixies but, if so, I do not know what they are.

Down
1. DISCRETE – homophone (“discreet”)
2. CARDINAL – double definition
3. OINK – O (nothing) + INK (which is in [pen])
5. INTERMITTENT – anagram of MEN IN IRE and TTTT (four times)
6. LATENT HEAT – hidden word
7. MOHAIR – MO (second) + HAIR (musical)
8. TOPPER – [s]TOPPER
11. ALICE SPRINGS – ALICE (girl) + SPRINGS (a requirement in bed)
14. EFFORTLESS – EF (two low grades) + FOR (for) + L (Liberal) in TESS (Wessex girl)
16. INTEGRAL – anagram of TRIANGLE
17. EDENTATE – EDEN (PM) + TATE (site of hangings)
19. DRAWER – double definition
20. SILICA – [ba]SILICA
23. THAW – anagram of WHAT

One Response to “Financial Times 13,138 by Mudd”

  1. Nathan Jesurasingham says:

“Pair of pixies (both short) – and ten more!”

    Tw(o)(pair) + elve(s)(pixies) (both one letter short) = Twelve.
