Monday Prize Crossword on 3 August 2009
dd = double definition
cd = cryptic definition
rev = reversed or reversal
ins = insertion
cha = charade
ha = hidden answer
*(fodder) = anagram

Another one of Dante’s delightful week-openers, not too difficult and yet entertaining. I would recommend newbies to cryptic crossword to cut their solving teeth with Dante (or Rufus in the Guardian)

1 ADAGIO Ins of A GI (a soldier) in ADO (trouble)
4 BRICKBAT Cha of BRICK (loyal chap) BAT (striker of a ball in baseball or cricket)
10 ELEMENTS Ins of MEN (employees) in *(steel)
13 SOPHIA *(pantihose minus net)
15 MAIL Sounds like male

16 COME UNDONE Cha of COME (how in Italian) UND (and in German) O (cipher is an obsolete term for the numeral zero — see Chambers) NE (directions)
19 FLEA MARKET Ins of A Mark (a discarded currency) In FLEET (quick)
20 LIST dd
23 INFORM Too simple to need explanation
25 DISCIPLE Discipline minus in
28 SCALES dd
29 ESTONIAN Ins of S (first letter of school) in ETONIAN (schoolboy)
30 CARESS Ins of S (second) in CARES (worries)

1 ABRAHAM dd, the first being the Jewish patriarch in the Old Testament
2 ADVERTISE Ins of TI (rev of IT) in ADVERSE (is not keen) I thought Dante had mistaken ADVERSE for AVERSE but a closer perusal of Chambers Thesaurus gave, inter alia, unfavourable, negative and unfriendly which are all shades of “not very keen on”. Dante is right, but only just.
3 IDEALS *(ladies)
5 RELY (enti) RELY
6 COMPOUND Simple versus compound interest
7 BENCH dd a reserve in, say a basketball game is out of court
11 ARMOURS Ins of OUR in ARMS (soldiers as in “a branch of the fighting forces” per Chambers)
14 BEDEVIL BED (base) EVIL (vicious)
17 ON IMPULSE *(smile upon)
18 AMERICAN A + ins of ERICA (girl) in MN (Minnesota)
19 FRISBEE *(beers if)
21 TRESSES Ins of SS (ship) in *(steer)
22 ACACIA AC (account or bill) A CIA (spy organisation)
24 FROST Excellent cd for when you do not have gloves in sub-zero temperature
26 TUBA TUB (rev of BUT, save) + A

    Still no sign of up-to-date puzzles on the FT website, but I have tried to answer Epping’s points on an earlier posting for those who are interested.
