shuchi.

A super-quick solve, with pauses to smile at some amusing wordplay. I have a few quibbles here and there, like the repetition of certain devices (VICE and firm=CO) but nothing too bad.

Across

1 BASEBALL BASE (foundation) BA (degree) LL (students)
5 EGG CUP E (European) GG (horse) CUP (trophy). A web search shows that horse = GG because when you ride you say “giddy up, giddy up”. Is that correct?
9 MAVERICK AVER (state) in MICK (Irishman). “renegade” has a stronger negative vibe than “maverick”, I think.
10 REPAIR REP (agent) AIR (broadcast)
12 SIREN SIRE (lord) N
13 SQUEALERS (ARE LESS)* around QU
14 INSTEP STEP (tread) on IN (inch i.e. part of a foot). “instep” is the arched upper surface of the human foot between the toes and the ankle.
16 EXIGENT EX (former girlfriend) I GENT (single bloke)
19 GREYLAG GREY (signs of aging) LAG (lag is a convict, so – “offender”. Why “habitual”?)
21 CREASE CR (credit) EASE (facility)
23 MILLSTONE M (married) ILL (trouble) STONE (weight)
25 COCOA CO+CO (firms) A[ct]
26 NARROW (RAN)< ROW
27 VICARAGE A RAG (tabloid) in VICE (depravity)
28 ADORED ORE (mineral) in ADD (sum)
29 TESTATOR TEST (try) (ROTA)*

Down

1 BEMUSE BE (act) MUSE (inspiration)
2 SEVERANCE ANC (African National Congress) in SEVERE (harsh)
3 BARON BAR (lawyers) ON (working)
4 LOCKS UP LOCK (rugby player) SUP (drink)
6 GRENADINE (DANGER)* IN E
7 CRATE C (carbon) RATE (charge)
8 PARASITE cd // Update: RAP (knock) reversed + A SITE (place). Thanks, Agentzero.
11 JUTE JUT (stick out) [to]E
15 TELESCOPE (STEEL)* CO (firm) PE (exercises)
17 EAST COAST [l]EAST (minimum) COAST (cross) // Update: [l]EAST (left off minimum) COST (expense) around (to cross) AThanks, Gaufrid.
18 EGOMANIA (A GAME NO I)*
20 GOON GO ON (continue)
21 CREVICE CR (credit) [balanc]E VICE (immorality)
22 CAREER dd
24 LARGO L (lake) ARGO (a ship in Greek mythology)
25 CRAFT RAF (pilots) in CT (court)

Chambers has it that gee-gee is a child’s word for a horse.

    Hi shuchi
    A correction to 17d if I may:
[l]EAST (left off minimum) COST (expense) around (to cross) A

Thanks, CGR and Gaufrid. I’d taken a break when I was at 17d and missed looking at the wordplay carefully. Sorry about that! Post updated with the correction.

    Hi shuchi
Note that 8 down is a charade: RAP reversed (knock up) + A + SITE (place)

Did anyone else have Football for 1 across as it completely messed up the top right segemnt and I think foot is equally correct for foundation
