The online Chambers was down when I tackled this, so it was back to the big red book, and none of the fancy advanced search features. I was pleased with how swiftly I made my way through it, so I'll probably stick to that method in future.

EV 879 Homograms III by Kruger

The preamble to this puzzle confused me at first: the anagram or homonym of the required word. The answer? Indicated? Unindicated? Either way what was the rest of the clue doing? After over-analysing I decided to scan the clues for a way in. A few seconds later I had a disease-like word begining with MYI- (MXI- and MZI- seemed even less likely.) Knowing lots of diseases end in -SIS MYIASIS was a reasonable guess. It was a disease! And, AS IS was defined as “unaltered”, an anagram of “unrelated”. So, I needed to resolve the anagrams and homonyms to make straightforward cryptic clues.

Guardian 24,803 (Sat 12 Sep)/Araucaria – Chekh mate

A while ago I was playing Articulate! when the name Anton Chekhov came up. This was described to my team as “a Russian chess player”. Easy, we thought. We must have came up with about 10 before the time ran out.
