The clue is an & lit, so you see the definition before you solve the wordplay.

The same argument applies to the feasibility of a “Misprint & lit” clue, much discussed in strictly Ximenean circles, without any final consensus being achieved.

I can understand and respect both points of view.

In 32d, the “character that must be dismissed” before solving is M, in order to complete the “message”. So the adjusted clue is Aye, an seen around capital of Invernessshire maybe?. This is the wordplay for IAIN but I can’t see any definition – to make this an ‘&lit.’ type of clue, we seem to need the whole word man, indicating a Gaelic male name.

In broad agreement with kenmac’s assessment … And in 12a, sources other than Chambers give POOD as ~36lbs, so it does indeed appear to be a misprint.

Concur with above comment on 25d, and I had 3d as RAGES without the R -> AGES = ERAS; + E(ccentricty).

Also, I have a problem with 32d: we need to remove the M (for TEAM), but we need it present to lead to the male name IAIN.
