A very good puzzle, a shade easier than Viking’s usual.
I would’ve preferred fewer word truncations in the wordplay, but that’s a minor nitpick in an otherwise solid effort.
1 SHEEPISH SHE (woman) + SIP (drink) in HE (man), reversed
5 UPKEEP UP (in court) PEEK (peer)
9 DEBILITY DEBIT (charge) around Li, + Y
10 MISERE MISER (compulsive saver) E[conomist]. A new word for me – ‘misere’ is a term from card games, which indicates that the player has a poor hand.
12 LOOSE LOSE[r] around O
13 INELASTIC IN (SALE)< TIC[k] (credit, mostly)
14 EDGING HEDGING (gardener’s work) – H[oeing]
16 NOISOME NO. 1 SOME (not a little)
19 CURATOR CUR[e] (ROTA)<
21 TOYOTA A TOY (model) OT (books), all reversed
23 CLEARANCE CLAN (sect) around EAR (attention), + CE (church)
25 RANGE STRANGE (surprising) – ST
26 ENFOLD [m]EN (people, almost) FOLD (close). Doubtful about this, as ‘fold’ and ‘enfold’ are too closely related. //Update: FOL[k] (people almost) in END (close). Thanks, Gaufrid.
27 BAD BLOOD (A BOLD)* in BOD (person)
28 MANUAL M AN[n]UAL
29 RESISTOR I’S in REST (surplus), + OR (gold)
1 SADDLE SAD (depressed) D[a]LE (valley, without top grade). Semi-&lit, saddle is ‘a low area between hills’. //Update: See comment#2.
2 EMBROIDER (DIOR)< in EMBER
3 PULSE [re]PULSE
4 SETTING STING (police trap) around ET
6 PRIMARILY PRIMLY (prudishly) around A RI (bible class i.e. religious instruction) //Thanks CGR for explaining RI.
7 EXERT EX[p]ERT
8 PREACHER REACH (succeed) in PER (by means of)
11 SEEN sounds like ‘scene’ (unseemly display)
15 INTER ALIA (AT AIRLINE)*
17 OUT AND OUT dd. Very nice.
18 ICE CREAM (RICE CAME)*
20 RENT dd
21 TEENAGE TEE (support) around E (drug) NAG (worry). ‘adolescent’ switches from noun on the surface, to an adjective as the definition.
22 REDDER Cryptic definition for the political leaning towards communism, and it’s a palindromic word, therefore ‘up and down’. Great surface, great clue.
24 ELFIN hidden in ‘sELF-INterest’
25 RABBI BB (books) in RAI[l] (bar, mostly)
