This seemed a tough week for me, reaching for the dictionary with about two entries written in. I think it was just the vocabulary that did for me, as the clueing seems clear and there’s nothing that didn’t make sense in the end.

Solving time: 25 mins, 2 missing (11ac, 2dn)
After blitzing the bottom half of this I thought I was on for a very fast time but then came to a grinding halt. ROACH and the ‘try’ of TRYSTING held me up in the top right but the top left corner was the hardest with several difficult clues, two of which (MEISSEN and TITICACA) I couldn’t spot in the time I had available.

Although I got to the ‘bottom’ of the theme quite quickly, the second variation had me chasing my own tail, and even barking up the wrong tree, for a while. But(t), it was the more feline clue at 20A which had me stumped the longest.
