Some rather tricky clues today which meant that this was far from a quick solve for me.

A pleasant and fairly quick solve over a pint in our local. We were pleased to get both 8ac and 23ac, which were words and phrases we did know, but had to root around in the back of our minds for.

A good puzzle from Araucaria, much of it quite easy (a relief to me) with perhaps 3 more difficult clues. I don’t get the subsidiary of 14 across, so any explanations would be much appreciated

Well, this one put up a fight but I won through in the end. I guess it must have taken me about 5 hours over about 4 days.

Monday Prize Crossword on 12 April 2010
Another soft introduction to the FT week with a wide variety of cryptic devices ranging from the simple anagram to homophones to double definitions; none too difficult nor taxing. Good entertainment.

Prize puzzle from the weekend FT of April 10
Cincinnus keeps up his great style. My favourite clues here are 1A, 16&17A, 24A and 6D.

Struggled quite a bit with the top right corner until 17 dropped. Enjoyable puzzle overall.

A mixture today of some very easy clues and some that were a bit more tricky to parse. I was helped by having blogged an EV about a month ago where 22,12,24 and 23,18,16 formed part of the theme so these fell into place quite readily. A good variety of clue types, with not too many anagrams, led to an enjoyable solve.

Fine puzzle from Dac as always. A nice balance with less familiar answers given easier wordplay, solving time 26 mins.

A new setter, I believe. Welcome! A very nice debut. This was slow going for me, perhaps because I am unaccustomed to the setter’s style. However, many of the clues struck me as fresh and clever. Read the rest of this entry »

What a lot of goodies, including hard-boiled eggs, all found on one plate. Medieval tales, English slang, British television trivia, etc. Thank goodness for Wikipedia, without which I would not have been able to produce today’s blog to guide the uninitiated. Extremely challenging for a weekday puzzle and great fun, too.

A very mixed bag from Rover, though mostly very easy. There were a few clues that I liked, but a lot of rather weak or dubious cryptic definitions, and various other niggles. There’s also a definite mistake in the solution at 21ac.
