Enigmatic Variations No. 923 Upward Motion by kcit

Posted by twencelas on July 24th, 2010

twencelas.

So a relatively simple preamble this week. Two unclued answers, some answers that don’t fill their available space and some UPWARD MOTION to fill the spaces at the end. All the clues are straight cryptic with nothing hidden – Sounds like an entry-level EV to me, but is it? But more importantly, I can use my pen again!

The puzzle itself proved to be in a game of two halves – the upper and lower, with all the spaces contained in the top 8 rows

Lots of relatively easy clues to get you going in this one – though, I should say,  a shortage of anagrams.

I started with the lower half and this readily yielded EJE_TO_ SE_T in the bottom row. The upward motion of the title did not require much lateral thinking to yield EJECTOR SEAT.

1 across had to be AL, which immediately indicated 2 of the spaces, 10 across was another GUS, then 11 across RIPPER, 12 across ARED, 14 across AS IS , 17 across ORTS, 23 across SEN, 25 across CASSIS and 28 across PAS. So before any could be inserted, the crossing downs needed solving. 1 down was AGING, 2 down URUS, 3 down SECTION, 5 down BRADS, 6 down LIAS, 15 down SOS, 19 down FESTERS and 20 down ONS.

Fitting this altogether yielded the grid below – shown after the transformation to yield a full collection of words in the final grid.

A L E C O B L A S T S
G J U S T R I P P E R
E A R E D O A S I S I
I R U C P A R O R T S
N E S T E D S S Y F O
G A M I N S G S E E N
E C C O C A S S I A S
C O R N I S T P A S T
A D R Y L P A L A T E
D E P O S R A I D E R
S H E N T E D C O R N
P A R I A S S E N S E
A D V E R T S R E I S
E J E C T O R S E A T

As to solving time – not long under an hour with the penny dropping in the first 10 minutes. The puzzle was neat and satisfying but never had me scratching my head – quite a lot of similarly constructed clues too, dare I say very mathematical, in its construction, for a word puzzle. 33 down was my favourite clue – very surreal in the imagery it conjured up.

Key = Definition, Rev. = Reversed, * = anagram, Dd = Double definition

Clues first followed by solution derivation.

  1. Mike Laws says:

Shame on you all! A splendidly constructed Phi puzzle, on the easy side for EV, and all you can say is … well, nothing.

Is it a requirement that either mistakes to be pounced on are made, or some other kind of controversy to be argued about is suggested, before comments are provoked?

  2. Tony says:

I hang my head in shame. I have noticed that the EV solutions attract far less comment than the Guardian ones, for example. Is it something to do with availability on the internet? But I find these EV solutions very useful and interesting so I hope they don’t disappear through perceived lack of interest.

It was mentioned in the preamble to this puzzle that the grid was symmetrical. That put me off because I thought there must be some special reason for mentioning the obvious.

And as for the previous EV, I thought the title “Works” – referring to the works of an author – dull and uninspired. One pleasure of the EVs is in realizing the significance of the title.
