Plenty of Flimsy whimsy in evidence today, although I thought that a couple of clues (12A, 19A) were, in part, too lazily self-referential. On the plus side, I learned a geographic factoid courtesy of fact-checking the clue to 10A.

An excellent crossword from Morph today. There are still some that I can’t see but I’m sure they will be explained by someone. As for a Nina, I suspect there is one since there are many different references (Beatles, Chuck Berry, various songs and books, cricket, the internet …) but I’m not sure what. We’re both rather bleary-eyed today, so apologies for any typos. This was about as easy as Araucaria gets, but had lots of nice touches which made for a light, enjoyable solve. A few nitpicks on reflection, but generally these applied to clues with very gettable definitions (e.g. 23dn) so they didn’t cause any major delays.

A lot of double definitions today it seems. Usual good stuff from Dac but I don’t get the wordplay for 21d

This was a very high quality puzzle from Pasquale, but unfortunately too tough for me complete in the time I have available on a weekday. There are several new words or phrases for me here (e.g. 18a, 23a, 5d, 19d, 22d) so this was quite educational :)

An easy (by Cinephile standards) but enjoyable solve today. No particularly outstanding clues but equally none of the customary liberties, though I rather liked the definition in 17dn.

Interesting theme and an entertaining solve. My first reaction was that there seemed an awful lot to keep track of in the extensive rubric!

A few new words for me today: 19 across and 20 down. Fortunately for me the wordplay was straightforward in both cases. Favourite clue of the day was 4 across. 12 across is also a very nice dd. Read the rest of this entry »

Another mastery offering from one of my favourite setters who is a deft hand at combining devilry and humour with a touch of risque in most of his puzzles. However challenging his clues may be, he always provides the occasions when you cannot help but laugh aloud.

Always nice to see a Raich puzzle. This one seemed really quite straighforward, though the NE corner held me up for a bit while the final few entries fell into place.

Nice puzzle by Nitsy which varied from quite easy in places to quite tricky, solving time 32 mins.

I thought this was a sound puzzle for those at the start of their cryptic solving careers. Some straightforward solves to get you going with some crossing letters, and then the rest falling into place with a bit of pencil-chewing. I’ve tried to give full explanations for the solutions to help newer solvers.

It’s always rather disorientating not to start the week with Rufus but even more so to see Brendan’s name on a Monday puzzle. However, this was more straightforward than many of his, since the entertaining theme was clearly spelled out in the middle row and then exploited to the full. Impeccable cluing, as ever, and some neat misdirection. Many thanks, Brendan, for a great start to the week.
