Simon Harris.

I made heavy work of this one, I’m afraid. There remain a few that I still can’t explain.

*=anag, []=dropped, <=reversed, hom=homophone, cd=cryptic definition, dd=double definition.

Across
1 CONCAUSE – CONC + A USE.
7 EASE – [l]EASE.
10 BELLYTIMBER – it’s an old word for food, but Exotic fruit, easily moving around that old food?
12 ST PAUL – PA in STUL[l]. The capital city of Minnesota.
13 ARDOUR – AR + DOUR.
14 YEARDS – E in YARDS.
15 VARRO – V + ARRO[w].
18 NESTOR – NEST + OR.
19 EPIPLOIC – PIPE< + LO + I + C.
22 AUTARCHS – (TAR + CH) in AUS.
25 CRYING – CR + (I in YNG).
27 CAMPY – MP in CAY.
28 URUMQI – U + RUM + QI.
30 ETAPES – E-TAPES.
31 POROUS – another one I don’t follow: Important to conceal shelter that’s easily breached.
32 PERLUSTRATE – PER (“a”) + LUST + RATE.
33 TOSE – TO[s]SE[d].
34 HERENESS – HER + SENSE*.
Down
1 COSY – S in (CO + Y).
2 OBTEMPORATE – (A BETTER POEM)*.
3 NEPALI – NE[ar] + PAL (“china plate”) + I.
4 CLARK – C + LARK.
5 ALUDEL – Al + U + LED<.
6 STANNITE – TIN< in STANE.
7 EM DASH – M in (ED + ASH).
8 ABORTS – AB + ORTS.
9 ERRORIST – I must be missing something here, because my reading gives me an “R” too few. It’s Broken toe is repeatedly right in slipper, which I parse as R + R in (TOE IS*).
11 EUROCHEQUES – ROCHE in QUEUES*.
16 REACCEPT – CEP in REACT.
17 FOUGASSE – FOU + GASSE[d], or perhaps GASSE[e].
20 CYMARS – C[urtse]Y + MARS.
21 FIPPLE – (P + P) in FILE.
23 AURORE – R in (Au + ORE).
24 CAMOTE – C[hew] + A MOTE.
26 BURAN – A in BURN.
29 ISIS – I + SI[n]S.

  1. nmsindy says:

I think the POROUS one refers to PORTENTOUS repeatedly in 9 dn might mean 3 Rs not just 2 Rs.

  2. Gaufrid says:

    Hi Simon

BEL (exotic fruit) YT (that old) in LIMBER (easily moving)
