Thanks for the blog, Ali, and thanks to Phi, who never fails to satisfy.

Nicely constructed, it appeared difficult at first but then the solving of it gained 13A.

Favourites were the long 26A: HEREWARD THE WAKE, 21D: SECRECY and 22D: ACCESS, all with excellent wordplay.

Thanks for the blog, Ali, and Phi for the usual high standard puzzle which I did not find too difficult tho it took me a while to see the wordplay for ACCESS, favourite clue MIAOWED.

Thanks for the blog Ali. Still can’t quite see dive for resort, always took dive to be more a dodgy bar or what have you. Seemed harder than normal with Phi, however that could just be the hangover after birthday drinks yesterday. Very quiet in here today.

    Hi flashling
Both Collins and COED only have the seedy bar/nightclub meaning for ‘a dive’ but Chambers gives “a resort, generally disreputable, often underground, eg a bar (slang)” and I think that here ‘a resort’ is being used in the sense of ‘a haunt’ or ‘a place frequently visited’ rather than somewhere visited by holidaymakers.
