I’m sorry that you are stuck with two Saturday puzzle blogs in a row from me, but thanks to the other Saturday Independent bloggers for letting me do some swaps to overcome periods when I am out of the country, or out of reach of internet connections.  I expect to be in Saudi Arabia when this blog is published.

Guardian 25,125 / Araucaria (25 Sept)

I do enjoy Araucaria’s alphabetical jigsaws and this was no exception. I don’t remember one previously where the answers could be entered into the grid in two possible ways but the completed grid clearly indicated which one was correct (or, as the preamble put it, ‘is to be preferred’).

Enigmatic Variations No. 933 – Grackles by Oxymoron

I ‘missed the boat’ at first on this one – thinking it was referring to ‘grockles’, a mildly derogatory term for incomer, or tourist, in some parts of the UK, so I was searching for inserted, foreign, or travelling/transposed parts of words for a while. The solver is to apply thematic treatment to a whopping 18 answers (more than a third of the 49 in all), with letters from nine asterisked squares giving a clue to make things easier…well, at least there weren’t any quotations or extra letters in sight!
