I always fear crosswords by Scorpion, expecting them to be impossibly hard. However, this one was perfectly all right, several nice clues, one I didn’t and still don’t understand, but that’s only usual. To begin with there was the problem that I didn’t have 12 or 23 so most of the Down clues were lost on me, but everything came smoothly enough once I solved them. Read the rest of this entry »

This was a challenge for me: more difficult than the usual Tuesday FT fare. However, Alberich has rewarded our efforts with a very clever puzzle. Particularly nice were several clues in which … (don’t read further if you haven’t solved the puzzle yet)

One of the events I look forward to every fortnight is the appearance of the latest Private Eye puzzle with its irreverent, risque and outrageous clues. Today, as Brummie, this compiler included some elements which make him popular as Cyclops albeit that here he urinates whereas he normally has a slash. This puzzle has all the hallmarks of a big hit with royalty, religion, sex, scientific shenanigan, a tilter of windmills and half a dozen chess pieces thrown in for good measure.
