A quick scan of the 3 most recent blogs on Scorpion puzzles reveals ‘perfectly all right, ‘a remarkably quick solve’ and ‘a bit easier’. Today’s offering – which I found really hard – may well be due reward for the consensus that the sting in the tail might be going! This one took a couple of runs, and there are a few where I can’t quite piece together the wordplay. A very good challenge overall.

Last Monday, the FT changed the usual setter and gave me Cincinnus to blog. Today, I got a double with his Guardian alter ego, Orlando. Double helping of steak and kidney pie! And of course, Orlando is a very entertaining compiler, using a potpourri of devices …..

No shortage of cleverness here! Some of these clues needed a second (or third) look before I could be sure I had parsed them correctly. My clear favourite is 17 down: natural surface, original wordplay. 26 across and 19 down were also amusing, and 20 down was impressively put together. Read the rest of this entry »
