Puck is always entertaining, and sometimes quite tricky, and this was certainly a lot of fun. I found most of it not too difficult, but the NW corner held me up for a while at the end, There’s a bit of a theme in this one, revealed in my comment on 1,2dn.

I’m a late substitute today, so apologies for any errors or omissions. I had plenty of smiles – and some outright laughs – with this entertaining Paul puzzle. There’s just one query – my second suspected ‘misprint’ of the week!

One equals zero? With Nimrod it does. An Ashes inspired crossword, our boys haven’t had the start we might have hoped for alas. There’s a lot of wishful thinking of ducks for the Aussie side around the grid, naturally clued as one. It is a Nimrod however, so there’s some I can’t work out.

I’m rather pleased that smiffy asked me to swap days with him this week due to his Thanksgiving celebrations as I ended up with this most enjoyable puzzle from Mudd. Probably towards the harder end of the FT spectrum, so it may not suit some solvers, but there were some good, and at times misleading, surfaces and interesting definitions.

A tough week, I think. At least, I had to rely heavily on Chambers while both solving and blogging. 3dn evades my explanation for the time being.

Crucible’s puzzles are a real treat, but sadly a relatively rare one. As you’d expect if you’ve done this setter’s puzzles before, this was pretty tough, and particularly one for those who like really cryptic definition parts :) The surface readings here are exceptionally good, with only a couple that seem a little stilted…

We are informed that “This is Viking’s final crossword”, and it’s a swan song that’s reassuringly familiar in style and humour to the other aspects of his generous legacy. Several of the best clues (including 26A, 28A, 5D) employ a similar, anagram-x device to entertaining effect.

The usual excellence from Dac today. Such smooth surfaces, and he clues everything so seamlessly and neatly. A couple I don’t understand, but they will no doubt be explained. Read the rest of this entry »

It was 3am in London when I started to write this blog and the temperature outside was zero. The call of the blog duty must be very strong; hence this surreal scene of a shivering Uncle Yap cracking another Gordius known for some good clues but almost always containing a slight oddity.
