I was a bit apprehensive seeing the preamble, but it was all quite straightforward. I think it was with 14d that I realised what modification was required, and then it was quite helpful to look for the remaining clues which led to "old" in the answer.
Thanks, Phi and Simon, for puzzle and blog; and a Happy New Year to all!

Very enjoyable. I was relieved that the modified clues were all modified in the same way. One thing I have noticed before with Phi's puzzles is that when he uses an unusual word, you are nearly always led to it by crossing letters etc., so that although you might check the answer in a dictionary, you don't need to trawl through one looking for the answer - a sign of a master setter. Thanks to Simon for the blog.

Rather than any old New Year resolution I took it that the OLD/NEW manipulation referred to the old adage that is said at New Year midnight: "Out with the old - in with the new".
