A somewhat pessimistic offering from Hectence, in tune with the economic climate of recession, shortages and cuts. Most of the surfaces were good and the answers gettable, although I have one or two quibbles regarding correspondences, as expressed below. There are some slightly trickier clues here today from Rufus but there are the expected ingenious anagrams and witty surfaces, with rather fewer cryptic definitions, I think, for those who dislike them. Anyway, a pleasant start to the week, as usual. Thank you, Rufus.

My Cyclops blogging debut — I’ll be sharing this with Beermagnet. It’s great to blog a Cyclops, because I’ve been taking the time to appreciate his clues, with their clever use of double meanings and their witty, topical and economical surface reading. This one was fairly gentle in terms of solving difficulty, I thought — so often with a Cyclops puzzle, there’s just one clue that holds me up for ages, but not this time.
