A fairly easy solve for me, after the previous day’s debacle with Nimrod for which I was quite glad. 12 ac was a new word on me but the anagram and crossing letters led nowhere else.

Appropriately enough, very much a tale of two halves for me. But in my case the top and the bottom: 1A came quickly enough and thus the top half. I stared at the bottom half for a long time before I saw SYREN and TAGGEE. And typing swails for SWEALS held me up forever. Not the hardest Azed ever — though I’m still wondering about the wordplay for YSHEND.

First of all, thanks to the Drurys and the Trafites for their 225 programmes, which make blogging so much neater and more elegent for an IT ignoramus like me.
It took me a while to get started on this, but once I did it all went in fairly well, except 14d, which I’d never heard of; answer provided by Chambers
