Independent on Sunday 1,104 by Hypnos

Posted by Simon Harris on April 17th, 2011

Simon Harris.

My first non-Quixote Independent on Sunday blog, and this week it’s Hypnos. This – perhaps appropriately – seemed a shade easier than I recall previous Hypnos puzzles being. I had to rely on wordplay for the unfamiliar 4ac and 22ac, but apart from that, no real problems in polishing this one off. There are some remarkably smooth surfaces, for example 15dn and 21dn.

*=anag, []=dropped, <=reversed, hom=homophone, cd=cryptic definition, dd=double definition.

Across
1 RETRO – [po]OR TER[ritory]<.
4 SAM BROWNE – (A MB + WORN*) in S[uit]E.
9 ISRAELI – Edward LEAR< in (IS + I).
10 GLEAMED – E[ntries] in (GLAM + ED).
11 BOW STREET RUNNER – (BRUNETTE ERRS NOW)*.
12 RENT-A-MOB – (I in (RENT + MO)) + B[ulge].
14 RATING – dd.
17 ETHNICE + TONIC, but with H (“husband”) swapped in for 0.
18 WATER-SKIW + A + TE[n] + RISK*.
20 IN THE NICK OF TIME – IN THE NICK + OFT + EMI<.
22 LOW MASS – (OW + M) in LASS.
23 HIRSUTE – R in HIS UTE.
24 MALADROITMA + LAD + TIRO*.
25 LIEGE – dd. Liège being a town in Belgium.
Down
1 REIMBURSE – (RUM + BEER IS)*.
2 THROW IN THE TOWEL – THROW-IN + THE TOWEL. I’m not quite sure where the THE comes from, but this seems to be about right.
3 OVERTREV< in OT.
4 SWINEPOX – cd.
5 MIGHTY – hom. of “my tee”.
6 RE-EDUCATE – (DUE CARE)* + TE.
7 WOMEN’S INSTITUTE – [t]WI[n] is the “short” version of this organisation.
8 ELDER – dd.
13 ALICE BAND – (CE + B + A + N) in A LID. This took quite some working out once the entry was spotted!
15 GUINEVERE – (U + I) in REVENGE*.
16 BACKCHAT – BACK + CHA[n]T.
19 FIASCO – IF< + ASCO[t].
20 ISLAMS in MALI<.
21 FERAL – ERA in FL.

Thanks Simon for the blog, and Hypnos, who has made it a little easier for a Sunday than his previous weekday offerings, but enjoyable nevertheless.

My favourites were 17A ETHNIC, for which I took some time to get the “got for” device; 20A IN THE NICK OF TIME, liked the EMI reference, and 13A ALICE BAND. Re your query on 2D THROW IN THE TOWEL, I think, per the whole clue – “Give up feature in football article on dry agent” – that THE is from “article”, with THROW IN as the “feature in football”.

This started in the upper left corner as though it would take me five minutes, but then slowed down by the time I had finally worked my way clockwise around it to the upper right. My last one in was ALICE BAND. I felt that the definition in 24a didn’t quite work, I don’t see insensitive = maladroit. As I was trying to come up with a synonym for maladroit in my mind, the best I could come up with gauche, and then thought how gauche = maladroit is almost a tautology.

I’m watching you guys who have taken over my Sindy slot and am pretty happy with what I’ve seen so far!
