Independent 7671/Dac

On the radio this morning was the information that Mahler died 100 years ago today, so I expected to find some recognition of this in the Indy crossword, and one of the rare occasions when the theme is immediately apparent. But no, it was the usual Dac, who doesn’t tend to do thematic crosswords (although now that I’ve said that all the Mahler references will no doubt be pointed out to me). To say that suggests that it was a bit of a comedown. Not at all: the usual high standard we expect from him, although I have doubts about one or two of the clues, doubts that may well be unjustified. I found this on the easy side for Dac — at any rate I made steady progress through it and did not have the usual hold-ups at the end. Read the rest of this entry »

Guardian 25,325 – Puck

A tough but very entertaining puzzle from Puck with a couple of cleverly intertwined themes and some very involved wordplay (one of those where you think “this could have been a prize puzzle”). Not all the connections are explicitly mentioned in the clues so there may be some that I’ve missed, not being an expert on the subject of 19ac 22dn and 3dn.

Inquisitor 1176: Unheeded Warning by Samuel

I must admit to having a soft spot for Samuel’s puzzles, so I was quite looking forward to this.
 
Seventeen clues have a misprint in the definition, correct letters spelling an instruction about how to enter ten answers. Two letters in the completed grid have to be amended (in contradiction to the instruction) to reveal the source, to be highlighted.
