A great crossword from Gozo, very enjoyable and I managed it with only a little help from Wikipedia this time.

The preamble stated that unchecked letters of the 10 unclued grid entries, including mutual crossing letters, spell CELIBATE BEDTIME WEEK. The unclued entries could be described by 13 contiguous cells (3,6,4) which extend from top to bottom of the grid. These cells (forming the ’27′?) must be highlighted.

A couple of weeks ago I noted that I was blogging my first Araucaria puzzle for over six months; today I see that this is my first Paul for even longer: since 23rd September last year in fact. This is a typically enjoyable sample of his work, with a fishy theme (revealed in the clues, so I don’t think giving anything away).

This was a relaxing puzzle with which to restart blogging. All straightforward, and perhaps made easier by quite a few anagrams (9 answers which are complete anagrams). Got off to a roaring start with 1A, 1D and 8D, 3 out the 4 long ones, and that helped tremendously. Some excellent surfaces, like 12A, 14D, 15D, 17D, 21A. Thanks Neo.

A very good crossword from Radian today, with 5dn as its theme, which appears in some form in many of the answers and clues. I find these crosswords where there is a large amount of linking between the clues rather difficult to get started on, because one doesn’t know what on earth is going on until one has cracked the theme. Another delightful Tuesday morning spent unravelling Arachne’s exquisite blend of teasers. Lots of entertainment value.

The scheduled blogger has gone AWOL so here is an analysis of the clues. I didn’t solve this puzzle (I have just parsed the clues from the published solution) and so cannot comment on its difficulty, enjoyability etc (I’ll leave that to others) but it did strike me that there was a lot of blurring of the edges when it came to some of the double/cryptic definitions.

Another Arachne quiptic for me to blog, which suits me very well; her clues are elegant and smoothly surfaced. There are a few general knowledge references which may not be so general, but that’s what Wikipedia is for. Read the rest of this entry »

I found I had only 8 to go after the first pass so I suppose this was easier than usual. That’s enough blather – let’s have a look at the detail:

A month ago, I blogged Hypnos and found the setter quite entertaining. June’s offering is just as varied with a couple of hard-boiled eggs as befits a prized puzzle.

A straightforward offering from Everyman this week, with a number of fairly obvious anagrams and charades, but none the less enjoyable for it, and with a couple new expressions – for me at least. Read the rest of this entry »

Having just finished spending far too long tearing my hair out on Sabre’s latest Listener, it was a pleasant relief to tackle Chalicea’s first EV puzzle.
