This is a pseudonym I do not recall seeing in the Indy before. It’s an anagram of Arachne so I guess it’s not beyond the bounds of possibility that it has some connection with the distinguished Guardian etc setter who uses that pseudonym.

Several of the clues required some thought to work out the wordplay; in all this Quiptic took me longer to solve than today’s Rufus.

Who would have thought in 1986 that the pudgy little chap with the fearsome wit could take on the responsibilities of the sarcastic classes and make it his own. In a way it is sad that there is still a need for Private Eye’s brand of investigative journalism, but there is always going to be a need for its humour, and the crossword is a big part of that.
