A neat little puzzle from Dogberry (‘Do not forget to specify, when time and place shall serve, that I am an ass’ – Much Ado, Act V Scene I). I felt it could have done with a little more variation, but it’s a sunny morning, so who’s complaining?

An Orlando puzzle with the usual good variety of clues and some brilliantly misleading surfaces, with a number of smiles to boot. ‘Wit’ and ‘elegance’ are the epithets that most naturally spring to mind when blogging Orlando’s crosswords and I’m afraid I can’t think of any original ones. Thank you, Orlando, for a real treat.

One of the reasons why I started blogging, and perhaps why my blogs might appear pedantically detailed to some readers, was that I wanted to help a couple of colleagues of mine who are not English-speakers but who are very interested in the English institution that is the cryptic crossword. As you might imagine, when explaining clues to beginners for whom English is not the mother tongue, I err on the side of caution and adopt the approach of explaining more rather than less.

Monday Prize Crossword/Sept 5
A very enjoyable crossword by Crux who is mostly clever (eg 8d) and inventive (eg 20ac) but at times also chestnutty (like in 13ac or 5d). Plus that I think what happens at 21d is a real letdown. However, I would like to stick with Crux because there are too many clues here that I really like.
