Thanks to Neil for letting an American upstart (and neophyte) as myself try my hand at blogging — albeit at first the easy end the spectrum (Everyman) and then later the harder end, namely Azed.

Certainly this site has served as an excellent forum for we poor solvers to meet the exalted and almighty setters. Who turn out to be Real People. Shocking!

I cannot remember how I discovered this site but it has been a real boon.

How many times have I thought the answer must be xxx but WHY? – now I can come here and see the reason

Happy Birthday and many thanks for all your tireless work. We all get stuck on a clue from time to time, and the clear and detailed explanations your bloggers provide are far more helpful than just looking up the answer. When you know WHY the answer is what it is, you’ll know what to do next time something similar appears in a clue. No doubt many readers have become better solvers as a result of your analyses – I know I have.

What’s more you keep us setters on our toes which can only be a good thing. And what a joy to find a forum where both newcomers and old hands are treated with equal courtesy, and where criticism of a puzzle or setter’s work is always positive and never malicious. Even on crossword forums that doesn’t always happen.

Celebrate well and keep up the excellent work!

A belated Happy Birthday from me too. Neil Wellard set up Fifteensquared about the same time as I was changing “Times from the Times” to a team effort after nearly a year of writing short reports on my own. If I remember right, Neil offered to help expand Times for the Times to cover other papers, but I thought it was better to have a separate blog. I can’t remember exactly why I thought so, but I think it was the right decision.
