Simon Harris.

My records are perhaps not entirely exhaustive, but I think this is the first time I’ve blogged a Glow-worm IoS puzzle.

This one was very enjoyable, and was pitched just right for a Sunday. There’s a mini theme here, based around 18dn.

*=anag, []=dropped, <=reversed, hom=homophone, cd=cryptic definition, dd=double definition.

Across
1 BYZANTIUM – (Y + Z + ANTI) in BUM.
6 ABBÉAB + BE.
10 SANGRIAS + (R[ef] in AGAIN*).
11 SEARING – from NEARING, with the N (“North”) becoming S (“South”) hence “altering direction”.
12 OBESE – [mother-t]O-BE SE[parated].
13 ERUDITION – (ROUTINE I’D)*.
14 CONSTANTINOPLE – CON + STAN + (TOP-LINE)*.
19 SIT ON ONE’S HANDS – (STAND-IN’S HOSE ON)*.
21 ANGOSTURA – UR in (A N.G. + ST + A).
24 CAMEO – CAME + O[livier].
25 BYRONIC – (ICON BY R[odin])*.
26 PHAETON – (TEA in NO H.P)<.
27 LIES – dd.
28 RACEHORSE – (OR CHASER ‘E’S)*.
Down
1 BESTOW – BEST + [thirtys]O[mething] + W.
2 ZONKED OUT – (DOZE ON UK T[rain])*.
3 NORSE – [gabo]N OR SE[negal].
4 INANE – IN A N E.
5 MOSQUITOS – MOSQU[e] + ‘IT + OS.
7 BLINI – BLIN[d] + I[singlass].
8 ENGINEER – [sc]REEN IGNE[ous]<.
9 HAÇIENDA; – (ENCHI[l]ADA)*.
15 SINGSONG – SIN + (S[ervice] in GONG).
16 ANNOUNCER – hom. of “an ounce, Sir”.
17 PEDOMETER – DOME in PETER.
18 ISTANBUL – (ST in IAN) + BUL[k].
20 LOUNGE – 0 in LUNGE.
22 GORGE – G[e]ORGE.
23 ASPIC – dd. The “lavender” definition was new to me, but apparently Aspic oil comes from a variety of lavender.
24 CLASHL in CASH.

Enjoyable puzzle with a mini-theme as you say. V minor point – I thought 16D was “an ounce, sir” but maybe you have to be of a certain age to remember those pre-metric measures – 16 ounces in a pound.

    Thanks Glow-worm and Simon.

Well spotted, NMS. Just a bit of careless re-reading of clues upon blogging, I’m afraid. All corrected now.
