Independent on Sunday 1,151 by Raich
Posted by Simon Harris on March 18th, 2012
Looks like Raich has drawn me again this week. No complaints from me though, as this was an enjoyable solve.
Relatively rarely for a Sunday, we have a theme here, being the films of James Dean. I wasn’t familiar with one of them, but Raich’s scrupulous clueing meant that this was not a problem. The actor himself appears as a Nina in the unchecked squares around the North and East sides of the grid.

Didn’t spot the Nina, oops, but a fair puzzle regardless, thanks Raich/NMS.

Thanks for an enjoyable solve, Raich, and for your helpful blog, Simon.
Sorry to be a pain, but I still can’t parse the ENS part of ENSLAVED (the LAVED I get). If you return Simon could you please clarify this?

Hi Superkiwigirl
From Chambers:
ens /enz/ (philosophy)
noun (pl entia /en’shi-a/)
1. Being or existence
2. An entity, as opposed to an attribute
ORIGIN: LL ens, prp of L esse to be

Hi Gaufrid,
Thank you for the explanation – I really must invest in a Chambers!
