Guardian Quiptic 650 / Hectence

One of the harder Quiptics that I have reviewed, but there are plenty of different types of clue utilised.

Another sound and enjoyable Monday morning puzzle from Quixote, but one which I found more difficult than some in the past. However, once I got my way into it, it fell out nicely.

Perhaps not as many cryptic definitions as usual from Rufus today, but lots of double definitions, and quite a few easy anagrams that helped me to get the grid started. 22ac is perhaps slightly obscure, but apart from that this is all nicely straightforward.

Quite a tough week, though I think I’ve at least managed to expain everything. There seem to be relatively few anagrams this week, along with a great deal of abbreviations in the subsidiary indications.

This is my debut Indy blog, and an enjoyable and not too difficult puzzle to start off with. Thanks Hypnos. Definitions are underlined in the clues. The pictures at the bottom each has an unidentified link to the puzzle.

So straight clues this week apart from seven with no definition (with a thematic treatment) and six unclued. So what will the “Two of a Kind” prove to be?

I think this was the easiest Saturday crossword we’ve done in quite a while – at least, it was very fast work until the final two clues (15a and 16d), neither of which we knew.

We were pleased to see that it was Phi again in his regular Friday slot. As usual, smooth surface readings and some tricky misdirections, especially in 8a and 25a. A really enjoyable puzzle and the more that we looked at it, the more we admired the compilation of the crossword. We felt that last Friday’s Phi wasn’t quite up to his usual high standards, but this is definitely back on form! Thanks Phi!

I’m writing this in a whole new postal district, surrounded by boxes of books that need unpacking… but the move obviously hasn’t helped my brainpower, as this engaging offering from Styx took me far longer than it should have. A nice puzzle, I thought; some unusual usages and baroque definitions elevated it a wee bit above bog-standard for me.

A reasonably straightforward puzzle from Araucaria, with a trademark long answer to help things along and some nice constructions to boot. Very enjoyable, I thought.
