Thomas99; I see what you mean but could you not read this as: 'Go, indirectly, by perimeter roads,' where the definition is 'indirectly?' Not Ximean and it might be better as: 'Indirectly go by perimeter roads.' Leaving 'go' out would, in my opinion, produce a rather ugly surface.

I normally avoid making negative comments if I can but I simply can't come up with a defence of 22a, especially for a beginner's puzzle. Can anyone else? The problem is the definition - it has to be "Go indirectly", I think - there's nothing else for "go" to do. And I don't see how that can be anything other than a verbal phrase. Can "sideways" be verbal? "I sidewaysed to the other side of the room"?

Without the "Go" the clue would be fine, and suitable for a Quiptic. I'm hoping it's some sort of typo.

Hi grandpuzzler and Robi, I make them more difficult and you keep getting them!
Pic#5 is wine and bottles stored SIDEWAYS.
Here's Caterina Valente, a singer with a powerful voice worth another listen:

Thanks Moley; about the right level for a Quiptic and a relief after my travails with the Rufus offering.

Thanks scchua; I liked LIEUTENANT. You obviously liked SIDEWAYS.

Thanks grandpuzzler for the help with the images. I agree that 5 is probably related to SIDEWAYS - a brilliant film that is worth a second look.

scchua, you are making these quizzes more difficult.......

#4 is Caterina Valente who had a hit with 'The BREEZE and I'
#8 is Douglas Adams who wrote 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' with Arthur DENT, played by #10, Martin Freeman
#9 is Charles Ponzi, of the Ponzi scheme notoriety - related again to IMPOSTER, I think.

Thanks Moley and scchua. Learned a new meaning for lumber today so thanks for that. Regarding the pictures: #1 Leonardo DiCaprio (Catch Me If You Can) and #6 Tony Curtis (The Great Impostor) played imposters - 1d. #2 Warner-Pathe Newsreel - 15d. #3 Paul Giamatti and #7 Virginia Madsen were in Sideways - 22ac. If #5 is California wine, then that could be attributed to the movie Sideways also. Can't help with the other pictures although #8 and #10 look vaguely familiar.

Cheers...
