Thanks Everyman, especially for the description of LIBIDO.

Thanks Lorraine; I had to resort to the web for the parsing of DETECTIVE. Gym is in my Chambers crossword dictionary as a synonym for exercise, so I guess that is OK.

I particularly liked ACRONYM.

Thanks Lorraine,

Just a minor point : I would say that 2d and 6d were dds rather than cds, as each clue has two parts meaning the same thing.

Yes Bamberger, I had the same thoughts on 16a but finally realised the answer was SOMME. However, I took 'miles' to be MM and
was left with SOE which I couldn't explain. So 'miles' in this case was a single M leaving some=certain.

Particularly liked ACRONYM and DETECTIVE. Thanks Everyman.

Got one wrong.
I was stuck on 16a and 17d.
For 16a with s????e, I was convinced that certain =sure and hence the answer was either surme or sumre river.
Getting 17d confirmed to me that it was the sumre.

Thanks, Lorraine.

Just to answer a couple of your points. 'Call' for 'need' works in a phrase like 'There's no call/no need for it'. And 'gym' for 'exercise' is a bit of a stretch, but I was okay with it in the end. Another pleasing puzzle from Everyman.
