This was a standard plain crossword from Azed. As usual in an Azed crossword, there were a number of uncommon words, some with Scottish links. However, I felt that today’s assortment of words were slightly less obscure than has been the case in some previous Azeds that I have blogged.

Apologies for the lateness of this post. We did the puzzle last weekend, but in the general chaos of moving house, I completely forgot that I was also meant to be writing it up, and we don’t have internet in the new place yet. We needed a couple of sessions to finish this one, which suggests that it’s on the hard side for Araucaria. I found it a satisfying solve, though – my favourite clue was 28 across, but there were lots of others that I noted for their cunning constructions.

Well quite complicated in the preamble stakes this week. Single letter omissions from definitions in some clues spell out a phrase and 4 down clues have missing letters in their wordplay. There’s also an unclued answer. Then there’s some highlighting to do – Sounds like an interesting cruciverbal safari?

It’s Phi-day so we are happy!
We sometimes find musical references within clues somewhat difficult but all of the answers here seemed fine. We don’t think there is a link between them but we have missed some of Phi’s themes and mini-themes in the past!
