Nimrod always keeps you on your toes, even if the theme becomes obvious fairly early on.

Quite an easy canter except for a couple of hard-boiled eggs, which you should expect from Gordius.

Enjoyable puzzle from Quixote, which I found perhaps a tad more difficult that he usually is. Solving time, 21 mins, and pleased to learn two completely new words getting them from the wordplay in both cases.

Nutmeg once again gives us a puzzle which is just right for the Quiptic genre. The usual variety of clues with nothing that should be beyond the newer solver.

I found this hard than average for Rufus, mainly because the structure of many of the clues (which is usually completely straightforward) is very well hidden in a smooth surface reading. I have some minor quibbles about a couple of definitions.

A Cyclops of average difficulty this week (seems like I always say that!), with nothing that held me up for long. I will go for 9d as my fave clue, for its complete absurdity. Read the rest of this entry »

The usual high quality Beelzebub puzzle, of medium difficulty I think. Just the one at 28ac that I can’t fully explain.

A puzzle with enjoyable surfaces. Thanks Glowworm. Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have an unidentified link to the puzzle.]]

A rare special on a non-competition day, which was a very pleasant exercise — I don’t remember seeing this type of crossword before and I found solving tricky, not for all the usual reasons but because I kept on having to read the preamble to remind myself of the difference between the Acrosses and the Downs. Much easier to blog than to solve, with all the moving between the two types.

This is our 25th blog on 225 and, amazingly, our first Anax, so we approached it with eager anticipation, as he is one of the most challenging Indy setters and one of our favourites.

A short preamble, straight clues apart from a protagonist to find and several without a definition 3 descriptions of the protagonist and four works by them – Sounds like this might be one for the advanced cryptic beginner.

A very enjoyable prize puzzle from Araucaria, with a mini-theme based on 27a (also my favourite clue in the puzzle). There were a couple here I needed to Google to be able to parse (13a and 5d), but otherwise we didn’t find this too difficult.
